Sudden cacophony of cell chirps and burps

We emerge from the depths of the Red Line subway tunnel going north, just past the North and Clybourn stop.

Suddenly, the roar of the tunnel is replaced by the din of beeps and chirps and yelps as passenger cell phones find their signals and come to life.

And the CTA is planning to provide cell phone access in the subway tunnel.

Dammit.

Will the CTA be dispensing earplugs to those patrons who are sensitive to the sound of people yelling into their cell phones? Or maybe cell phone etiquette guidelines to those people who will take advantage of subterranean access to keep their fellow riders abreast of their bar-hopping plans for the coming weekend? I propose they build those cell phone booths i've been hearing so much about, but as long as they can make sure that those booths don't used as impromptu urinals instead.

Don't forget those helpful and prominent "Jack" posters.

People are already yelling into their cell phones above ground. With as loud as it gets underground when the train is really booking, can you imagine how much louder people will have to yell to be heard over the tunnel train noise? Ugh.

I still like the "Urban A**hole" cards on www.glarkware.com (with which I have no affiliation whatsoever, other than a faint tinge of jealousy that I didn't do it first):
