June gem: More late-night madness
Continuing my series of the Best Tattler Tales of 2005, I offer a true gem from June. I've found that I get lots of great material after my class at around 9 pm or so on the Red Line.
The late-night Red Line Special
I need to spend more time on the Red Line late at night, during non-rush hour periods, for great Tattler material.
First, on the way down to the Q101 Block Party last night, it looked like a tornado had hit the Hobo Corner. There were newspapers strewn all over, and half-eaten pizza slices sitting upside-down on the seat. Of course, people avoided it.
But the fun really began on the way home. We boarded the Red Line at about 10:30 p.m. In the four seats right by the doors, we saw:
- Two young Latinos, a man and a woman, who may have been siblings, were reading aloud from a book about holy apparitions.
- A woman in her 60s calmly sat and painted crackers with cream cheese and ate them.
- Another woman in her 60s with two large bags, just thisclose to being dubbed a bag lady. But her large button saved her from that appellation: The button was a photo of President Bush, Rumsfeld and Cheney. The caption said: "Asses of Evil."
The night before, I was returning from a class at about 9 p.m. and was caught in a cell-phone triangulation/strangulation. I was surrounded by a triangle of cellers. And the motorman was making lots of announcements about track work, so they were all saying they couldn't hear their phone mates because the motorman was too loud.
So annoying. So tedious.
