Subway celling bonus: 911

The Trib reports today that U.S. Cellular customers will have full celling access starting today. We knew that was coming, and some U.S. Cellular customers have been using their network underground during the test period.

But the real news is other cell service users will be able to dial 911 in emergencies. Those using Verizon and Sprint phones will be able to call 911 because "their operating systems are compatible with U.S. Cellular's.

Now all you U.S. Cellular folks, let's please limit your usage to texting and email, OK? The cell yell in the tunnel would be unbearable.

I wonder how to get anything working with Verizon. I have roaming access with my plan, but I show no service when I get into the subway.

:(

Riding on the Red Line Subway this afternoon prior to the Cubs game, a US Cellular user gets on his phone and tries to have a conversation while the train is running through the tunnel between Clark/Division and North/Clybourn. Needless to say he was almost yelling at the top of his lungs to carry on his conversation.

I STILL think that is was not a good idea to have full service in the subways. How can you have a conversation when the train is loud as heck running through the tunnel?

Hey Tony, we knew this was coming. I am with you. Why in God's name would you need to make calls in the tunnel? They should've allowed only 911 calls.

Sprint works in the subway with digital roaming. According to one rep I spoke to, "data roaming" may become available in the future.
