Don't you have headphones for that phone?
Here's an alarming new trend:
People -- usually very young folks -- playing music videos or MP3s on their phones without the benefit of headphones. Monday a high school kid was just listening to MP3s on his phone for the entire ride downtown. I admit, the sound wasn't THAT loud, but it was still annoying.
Allow me to remind folks of the CTA's newest "genteel" reminders on that behavior:
"Please be considerate when talking on the phone or listening to electronic devices so as not to disturb other passengers."
I was disturbed, as were others, by your behavior.
Knock it off. Thank you.
You know, you can get up and move away from the people with the loud music.

really bradley? because i couldn't move at all on the x49 yesterday. no seats, no room to stand, certainly no room to "get up and move away from the people with the loud music."

Yeah, those doors get awfully crowded during rush hour. I've heard people talking about an "aisle", but maybe that's only on New York buses or something.

yeah, unfortunately i think when motorola, et al, designed/created these mp3 playing phones, they should have made them so that you can only use them with headphones. i have a motorola slvr which has the mp3 player and yes, you can play it without the headphones, but why would you? it doesnt get loud enough to be, i guess you could say, "enjoyable", but i'm sure it is plenty loud enough to be annoying.
i know this is not cta, but on a train ride from chicago on an amtrak i encountered many, MANY people with both these phones and/or regular mp3 players without headphones, which was bad enough, however there also were at least 3 people playing dvds on their dvd players without headphones which is kind of more annoying than music if you ask me.
finally, in response to bradley, there is hardly any way to get away from someone playing music/etc., that is annoying. #1 due to space constraints and #2 due to the fact that you heard it, it is then hard to ignore it no matter how far away you are, as you can still at least faintly hear it.

Let's not forget the Playstation handheld that also plays music. I stat behind some kid who nonchalantly blasted rap music while playing a video game. I didn't mind so much because I happen to like the song but it was filled with profanity and, more than anything, I was embarrassed for the old Professor-Type guy sitting next to me who kept fidgeting with his glasses every time the f-bomb was dropped.

Bradley, why should anyone have to move? Does the comfort of one person outweigh the discomfort of others?
With headlines about random violence in the city, who really has guts to do something about it?
When did common courtesy get thrown out with the trash?

What's really annoying are the people who use the walkie talkie feature on their phone instead of actually talking through the headset. They're louder than cellers...and have more vile conversations.

cmama, i agree with that also. i used to have a nextel phone with the walkie talkie thing on it. i think the thing is people are too stupid to realize that they dont HAVE to use it that way. you can press ONE simple button and it will only go through your speaker by your ear not the whole damn speakerphone thing.
yes more annoying, yes more vile conversations, but also, that damn annoying series of beeps noise when they connect and disconnect from talking.

I know I'll be completely alone in this but I would much, much rather hear other people's music than other people's cell phone conversations or video games. Hearing music is a lot more pleasant than a bunch of random beeping or some asshole's business call.

That's subjective though. What if that music was the newest release from Cannibal Corpse? Or a retrospective on failed Broadway Showtunes? Would that experience be pleasant for you? Bad music in a confined space can be classified as torture. (and I'm a music lover and a musician myself!) And it may be against the Geneva Convention.

I had to stop taking elevators because that muzak they play in there is just plain aweful.
Get over it, thats part of living in a city.
