After the Alert: Why those bridges were stuck up

We got a CTA Alert Saturday afternoon about bridges being stuck in the up position affecting traffic on the Pink and Green lines:

"CTA has announced Lake St Bridge stuck in "up" pos. Pink and Green Line svc disrupted at River. City working to repair."

Gapers Block today notes that the 90-degree weather caused them to be "stuck up."

I experienced this on Saturday on my way to a wedding shower in Evanston. On the Clinton platform, I stood there waiting for a train and a Green Line stopped at Clinton and then reversed. It wasn't until about 15 minutes of waiting did I get an explanation as to what was going on. Then I had to take a shuttle bus over to Clark/Lake, walk to State/Lake and get on a Red Line train heading northbound, no southbounds on the weekend. So, I was a good 45 minutes late to the wedding shower because the CTA. I wish that they would have been more forthcoming with what was going on when I entered the station, so I could have found an easier way to get to the Red Line and not be late for my event.

This bridge problem also caused me to miss a Metra train on Saturday afternoon...sure wish I would have stayed on the subway...at least it can go UNDER the river.

I was also on the Green line heading into the loop. It took us almost an hour to get from Austin to Ashland (because they had to wait for trains ahead to get out of the way) where they sent us off the train with that great CTA lie, "There are shuttle buses waiting downstairs." There were no such thing, of course (maybe they were all at Clinton?). I finally took an Ashland bus to the Blue Line at Milwaukee & Division. Perhaps the most disturbing part, however, was that the Ashland bus driver kept telling people she could take them to a red line stop. When we pulled up to the Blue Line stop at Milwaukee she said "oh, I guess it's the Blue Line--I don't know the trains so well."

I'd love to be able to see these alerts again. Anyone know when the group might be accepting new members again? I've been trying for weeks with no luck.
