Huberman asks riders to plead: "No More Doomsdays. Fix Mass Transit"

Chicago Card/Plus users found this missive from CTA President Ron Huberman in their email boxes this morning:

Dear Chicago Card and Chicago Card Plus Users:

I am writing to inform you that the fare and service changes scheduled for September 16th have been postponed. This means that the cost of your passes and fares will not increase on Sunday, and any routes scheduled for elimination will continue to operate.

However, the temporary loan of $24 million provided by the State postpones these changes for less than two months. On November 4th, if the Illinois General Assembly has not acted, we will be forced to increase fares and reduce service.

The bottom-line is we need a comprehensive plan to fund mass transit.

I know that you are frustrated about the potential service cuts and fare changes. So are we. That is why we are again asking you to join with us and tell our State leaders: "No More Doomsdays. Fix Mass Transit."

Please visit transitchicago.com, or call 1-888-YOUR-CTA, for information on how to contact your state legislators. Please make your voices heard as we fight to preserve and improve the mass transit system Chicago needs and deserves.

Thank you again for your support. We are committed to improving your experience on the CTA.

Sincerely,
Ron Huberman

Yeah, and I received 8 of these e-mails. Typical of the CTA. Not only is there bus bunching, but apparently e-mail bunching as well. Great.

I got three of them and they still haven't fixed my 30 day pass.

I just have to say good on the CTA. The Blue Line slow zone on the subway between Damen and the Loop seems to be all cleared up. Trains were even running this weekend.

Its so nice to make it downtown in a reasonable time period.

I was skeptical about Huberman, but so far, so good.

Now, if only the idiots in S-field would get their heads out of their asses.

The RTA never should have taken the money. The political pressure would have been unbelievably intense after only a day of "doomsday".

Now they not only have the pressure taken off, they also have the Trib declaring that the problem with the CTA is mismanagement rather than lack of funding, due to the report from the Feds. Awesome -- I can't wait until someone starts talking about how you "can't throw money at the problem." Despite the fact that the management has changed for the better since the derailment.

Indeed, Adam. The blockheads in Springfield need to read that Tribune report. I read it this morning over breakfast, and was profoundly disturbed. I then asked in my mind, "What the [expletive] is it going to take to fix mass transit? An accident worse than last summer's?"
To that, I can only say, Gosh, I hope not. Huberman is doing a great job--far better than Kruesi ever did. We can all help him--by kicking Springfield where it counts, and getting the funding mass transit needs. After all, they had the cojones to vote themeselves another pay raise, so where's ours?

I just love how its all Springfields fault. While both the City, County and State can share in the mess, Mayor Daley appointed an insider with no experience and no will do do anything to keep things working. He made a complete mess of what he had and swept things like track maintenance under the rug and we see what happened then.

Then Ron, instead of investigating thoroughly, fired all the track maintenance/inspection people without a fair trial and lets not forget all those "lost" inspection records.

If you look at the mood as reported in the Trib this weekend in their investigation, the public still doesn't think that the CTA is doing a good management job and I'm right there with them.

There are better ways to use capital investment funds for capital projects than spending them for "fancy" stations.

How about replacing escalators that seem to break down daily? How about reworking the plumbing so that Lake CTA doesn't form in the underground stations every time it rains. How about making EVERY station ADA accessible (like Washington, Monroe, etc, etc etc.)How about those monogrammed clear CTA trashbags, Ron, how about spending all that money (2 million from accounts) to tell us about Doomsday via advertising...

Look at the block 37 fiasco...overbudget for a station that really won't do alot to fix any problems other than make it easier for the CTA to charge more for "business service" to Ohare while putting hardship on riders by closing down the Washington street Red line for years? How about the 5 people lounging in the station entrances? How about 4 or 5 at the track level in the red line underground stations? I think we can do a little cutting there....maybe a good start would be selling that nice big luxurious HQ building? That should ease a big part of the cuts for this year at least.

Huberman had a chance to come in and fix things and as we learned he's just like Frank...as the July 4th fiasco was an "inconvenience". It was like Frank never left.

Why don't you make some changes Ron that enhance our service rather than cutting it. We want action, Ron. The first thing you did was blow off the public comment meeting to "talk with Springfield about funding". Nice job Ron. We see where that got us.

Kevin
