Dire Straits band rides the Red Line to Wrigley for a game
Martha, a frequent commenter here, shares this with us:
Just in case you need some items either to piss off Unindicted Co-Conspirator or excite him/her with transit policy issues in other cities....
Radiohead may have worn shirts, but Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) and his band actually took the Red Line to a Cubs game when they were in town for a show in mid-July. A friend of mine is a huge Knopfler fan and alerted me to a band member's blog. There's a lot of extraneous stuff on the link, but there is a picture of band members on the train.
Check it out here.
On that page, Dire Straits' Guy Fletcher also writes the frightening story of the 7-year-old who was hit by a foul ball off the bat of Cubs pitcher Ted Lilly. Thankfully, the lid is doing OK now, but it's interesting to read his account.
Yes it does piss me off!
A day after Pat Ryan the head of the Chicago 2016 group was quoted saying this idiocy: "We have a really good rail system", this mindless drivel is what you put up for the only item of the day?
Every other blog that's put this comment up has had numerous people ripping Ryan, & Daley too, for this stupid, wrong & thoroughly out of touch remark. Any fool can figure out that Ryan has never ridden the CTA. We already know that Daley has never used it either.

Mission accomplished! But seriously, UC-c, if you want to do something meaningful, write to the IOC. Contact your elected officials. There has to be some public money involved if Chicago gets the bid. Let your congressional rep and our illustrious senators know you want $$ to go to permanent transit solutions, not temporary Olympics infrastructure. Ripping Richie and Pat Ryan on a blog accomplishes nothing. Neither of these gentlemen, and I use the term loosely, can or could successfully manage the enterprises with which they are/were entrusted. The national press is onto these two, so hopefully the IOC is paying attention to their sad attempt to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

I didn't know that Ted Lilly was nicknamed "The Lid", but I don't follow baseball all that closely. Personally, I'd be more concerned about the 7-year-old who was hit by the foul ball.
Anyways, I just thought that it was awesome that someone as rich and famous as Knopfler would take public transit to a ballgame rather than taking a limo like the local bigwigs do.

So Kevin needs to do the same thing everyone else does?
If there are so many other blogs on the issue already, then why does Kevin have to do the very same thing? Seems to me you're already telling us the issue is being sufficiently covered.
I think we need a few more fun stories. I know I need a rest from it all, and I don't always have the willpower to purposely stay away.
And I like Kevin's blog because, like real life, it isn't always serious.

On what planet is the national press onto Daley & Ryan?
They don't even know who Ryan is unless they try to go to Dyche Stadium or McGaw Hall to see Northwestern lose & find out they don't exist anymore!
Daley still has the national press enthralled with "The city that works label" or don't you ever see all those stories about how clean Chicago is compared to NY, SF or LA?
Of course the only clean part of Chicago is the 2 square miles of downtown, the other 228 square miles are a filthy mess.
The national press' idea of Chicago is: Dead people vote here, the stockyards stink, the L is noisy & hot dogs.
Basically, they're stuck in 1960!
And write to the IOC?
Puh-leeze!
They gave this year's games to China which promised total freedom to all who attended.
And how's that one working out Martha?
The IOC is a group of Grandees & Grand Poobahs that travel the world on other people's money & then decide to put the Olympics in a city after they've been wined, dined & bribed, plus guaranteed free first class travel to the site & every luxury comped during the games, including the hookers!
And the public money involved for a Chicago Olympics, why that's going to be the almost $1 billion Little Richie has stolen & socked away from all the TIFs in Chicago! [Currently it's over $500 million socked away, but by 2016 it will be close to a billion.]
Begin by reading Ben Joravsky on TIFs in The Reader!
And start living in the real world!

Rusty, you seem to forget that there's no guarantee the people reading this blog are reading any of the other blogs that ripped Ryan for that crack.
Unless of course Rusty is really Kevin O'Neil, Joe Moore's good buddy!

He's a PR guy who made the comment. I mean, he's not far off. Our system doesn't suck. It's somewhere between average to good in my estimate. I'm sure everyone has their opinion on it though.

But I should follow that up with, there is definitely room for improvement.

Time for UC to start his own blog...so he can grind his axe the way he likes it.

In a modern twist in the tree falling in the forest..
If you start a blog, and no one is there to read it, is it still relevant?

Grandees and poobahs and hookers, on my!! This is Grand, indeed.

Unfortunately, UC-C is right about the TIFs, and I echo his recommendation to catch up on Joravsky's columns at chicagoreader.com if you haven't been following it.

I think the real reason Mayor Mumbles is in China is to learn better tactics for dealing with dissidents so he can finally deal with that pesky Ben Joravsky.

We do have a good rail system. I'll leave it up to others to decide if "really good" is too much of a stretch, but you'll not catch me criticizing a guy for saying it's good.
I think UC-c is losing perspective by the day. The "Joe Moore's good buddy" comment shows especially poor judgment, IMO.

Martha, you don't like my description of the 200+ members of the IOC?
A large percentage was & continues to be people with titles of nobility, a few even when their country has abolished such titles.
That's a grandee.
The rest would be considered to be grand poobahs, people that think that the sun rises & sets with their permission.
They demand every luxury possible, but never pay for a damn thing.
It is an appallingly corrupt group of individuals!
If Chicago were to get the Olympics, part of the contract with the IOC demands and requires a total exemption from all US & local laws for the Olympic venues.

UC : Let's see your proof.URLS please. If you don't have proof you're just blowing smoke, as usual.
