"Penny rides" return for New Year's Eve
Yes, you can ride for just a penny again from 8 pm Wednesday, Dec. 31, till 6 am Thursday, Jan. 1. Bus and rail service also are extended for the evening.
And I put "penny rides" in quotes in the headline because as I reported last year, the rides are really free. Except, the CTA can't advertise free rides.
On New Year's Day I won't be commuting anywhere because I'll be rooting for my alma mater in the Rose Bowl. Go Nittany Lions!
I'm THRILLED that you're a PSU grad! Me too!

Keep a few pennies handy. I've had bus drivers earlier in the 8PM range demand payment. Last time, I hadda give her a dollar, but I made her promise not to hit up the next 100 riders :P

You don't even need the penny!
Most drivers don't care & any that do are making fools of themselves.
I went through several L stations & most just opened up the wheelchair gate & let everyone on free.
This is all because of some idiotic state law that prevents the CTA from giving free rides, but how can that still be legal, what with the elderly & low income disabled getting free rides now?

Yeah, the CTA should just declare, "After 8 PM, everyone's a senior citizen!"

I've also had experiences where the bus driver demands the penny- even to the point of not allowing the passenger to board. Another passenger put in a dollar and told the driver that he was covering that passenger and the next 99 others. When yet another passenger tried to board a few stops further, the driver again demanded a penny. When confronted by the Good Samaritan, the driver got loud and indignant.
This was the... 80, I believe, at around 9:30.
