Money talks in adolescent discipline

On the Red Line south on a Monday morning, Mom is reviewing her 9-year-old son's report on Odysseus.

He is explaining something about the report when he stops him abruptly and says, "I told you not to talk with your fingers in your mouth!"

"But I don't!" -- "I just saw you!" -- "No!" -- "Yes!"

Mom: "Now I just want you to say: 'I will work on it.' Say it!"

"I'll try."

"That's not what I want to hear. "Say 'I'll work on it.' "

"I'll try."

She puts her hand near his face, as if to slap him. "I'll take $5 from your allowance. Say it!"

"I'll work on it."

Money talks.

Manipulating kids with money is a losing strategy. If money is the reason for good behavior, then all behavior can be justified if the price is right. What is this parent going to do in five years when there's the question, "Why would you sell drugs to your friends?" and the answer is, "They give me money." The parent was the one who established money as the control point.

CTA is experiencing significant delays in the Clark Junction area (where Red, Brown and Purple Line trains converge just north of Belmont).

Due to these delays, Purple Line Express service for this evening’s RUSH period is cancelled. Local Purple Line service between Linden and Howard will still operate.

Red and Brown Line service continues to operate but with the delays mentioned above.

Also to help alleviate the congestion, CTA will run a bus shuttle nonstop from Belmont to Howard for those who normally take the Purple Line Express.

Customers are encouraged to take alternate north/south bus routes north out of the Loop: #36 Broadway, #134 Stockton/LaSalle Express, #135 Clarendon/LaSalle Express, #136 Sheridan/LaSalle Express, #143 Stockton/Michigan Express, #144 Marine/Michigan Express, #145 Wilson/Michigan Express, #146 Inner Drive/Michigan Express, #147 Outer Drive Express, #151 Sheridan and #156 LaSalle buses.

Extra CTA personnel will be at Loop stations to direct customers.

Thank you for your patience.
